BANDON, Ore. – The Bandon School Board is moving forward despite several public complaints.

The board voted to approve the recent evaluation of Superintendent Shauna Schmerer amid complaints filed against her and other board members. The complaints alleged a hostile and unprofessional work environment, violations of public meeting laws, and various other grievances.

During a board meeting on Monday, those concerns were raised during the public comment period. One parent called for the superintendent to be placed on administrative leave pending a third-party investigation.

“I’m just wondering why the school board seems so bent on protecting the Superintendent from accountability for her poor leadership and her poor decisions,” the parent said.

In total, six complaints were dismissed, four of which fell outside an established time limit set by the board.

Board Chair Angela Cardas addressed the room and apologized for any mistakes she made.

“I can’t apologize more for… just, I had no idea. I’ve done this for eight years, and I’ve never had a complaint up until now. Now we’ve got a lot, and we are trying to dig through them, and we’ve made some mistakes on how we do that,” Cardas said.

As for the superintendent, the board said it will work with Schmerer over the next several weeks to develop goals that align with the district and address areas for growth.

Two complaints have been sent to an independent investigator for further review.
